As Deal Journal has previously reported, the competition for deals in China is also affecting valuations, though that hasn’t stopped dealmaking in the country. The value of private equity deals in 2011 increased to US$20 billion, up 48% from the year before. And with private equity accounting for just 0.14% of China’s GDP, there’s still plenty more room for deals, says Ernst & Young. By comparison, private equity accounts for 0.67% of U.S. GDP.
Technology was one of the hottest sectors for private equity in China last year, with the value of deals rising 139% on-year to $4.1 billion. The largest of these was the $1.6 billion investment by a consortium including Silver Lake in Alibaba Group.
Things are rather different in India. There, global firms continue to dominate the landscape, completing nine out of the top ten deals in the fourth quarter of 2011. However, sponsors had difficulty exiting investments last year as India’s stock market dived, resulting in a backlog of listings. Some firms have found creative ways of exiting investments, however. Ernst & Young points to Warburg Pincus’s incremental sale of its stake in Kotak Mahindra Bank on the open market.
