Note: “China Wealth” returns to Shanghai today from Taipei.
Investors in China’s main financial district are talking about the following before the start of trade today:
China search engine Baidu, led by the country’s billionaire entrepreneur Robin Li, said today net profit in the first quarter rose by 76% to $299 million as growing Internet use helped advertising sales. The company’s U.S.-traded shares were lower in aftermarket trading on worries of a slowdown from that torrid growth pace, a concern that might affect other Internet shares today.
In other overnight news, the mainland can’t compare with Taiwan when it comes to home-grown suppliers to Apple that investors looking to profit from iPhone and iPad growth can consider buying. Yet Apple’s thunderous 94% profit growth in its latest quarter announced today may give a boost to shares in the company’s Chinese suppliers. That group includes BYD, Suzhou Anjie Technology and GoerTek.
Another influential Chinese retailer has posted a drop in earnings, sending its shares to the lowest close since it went public early last year. Shenzhen-listed Zhejiang Semir Garment, led by billioniaire Qiu Guanghe, said net profit in the three months to March fell by 39% from a year earlier to $25 million Investors yesterday bid the shares down by 6% to the lowest close since the company listed. Co-founder He Xiangjian, ranked No. 161 on the 2012 Forbes Billionaires List with wealth of $6.2 billion. Midea is a joint venture partner of United Technologies.
Shares in a company controlled by one of China’s self-made women billionaires, He Qiaonv, continued to slide yesterday after it posted disappointing earnings on Monday.
